With 4.5-week grades posting on September 2, reflect on your experience in AP Language so far. What has been going well for you, what has been challenging, and what is one thing you need to improve moving forward?

So far my experience with mutual-cultural lit has been good. Just being in class and having discussions, taking notes and retaining that information, and competing the assignments has been going the best for me. Challenges in front of that has only been my thought process. The only thing I have let got in front of me is thinking too much on some assignments. I mostly just need to improve my thinking by not thinking so much on whatever I am doing. I feel like if I just master my mindset in this class, I’ll have no barriers in between.

Judith Ortiz Cofer says, “The Island travels with you.” What part of your culture, family, or identity do you feel “travels” with you everywhere you go?

There multiply things in my culture that travels with me. For example no matter where I go, I’m defending going to vibe to some music. Whether it’s rap, neo soul, soul, rnb, etc, I will forever have music around me. Another thing is no matter where I go, I’m always going to use some type of slang, whether I have to explain it to the other person or they understand me, I’ll forever use slang. Lastly, my faith in my taste in food will follow everywhere I go. Because of my strong faith in Christ and my strive to follow him, I will praise him whether I’m in America or another country. And then secondly, my taste in food will go wherever I go. I usually like entrées with a source of some meat, rice and vegetables. Most countries have dishes like this so if I go out of America, I’ll think I’ll be used to other countries foods.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on activities. Select one and tell why.

I enjoyed class-discussions the most in class today, August 25, 2026 in 6th period. We went over the myth of a Latin woman and how stereotypes affect people of different groups. As we read throughout the first paragraph of the story, we broke it down and analyzed it. I was able to conduct what stereotypes that people who are Latino/a has to face. With the class discussions, it gave a boost to my understanding of the story and to how I’m suppose to complete the assignment.

Write about an experience when someone assumed something about you because of a stereotype. What was the situation, and what did you do?

One time someone assumed I was aggressive or angry because of me being African American. It was June of 2019, and me and my family were staying in a hotel in Miami for vacation. One day, we decided to go to the pool to enjoy a hot summer day. When I get there I notice one kid already in the pool. Even though I could’ve simply talked to him, I simply minded my business and went for a swim. As I’m swimming, his beach ball slowly drifts to my end of the pool. I grabbed it and gave it to him and said “here you go.” After that, he then says “I was sacred you was gonna steal my ball.” With me being bewildered at the statement, I ask him why he thought that. He then says, “I usually see people of your group aggressive and steal stuff from people.” After he said this I didn’t know how to respond to the stereotype. But I quickly informed him in the most formal tone that that’s a myth made up about people of my ethnicity and that not everyone is going to steal from you. The kid was French, and d...

In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother provides her daughter with numerous expectations about how a girl should behave. Reflect on a specific gender expectation within your culture that has been challenging for you to navigate. Then describe one clear example of this expectation and explain why it has been difficult for you. Keep your response concise, vivid, and focused on your personal experience.

A gender expectation in my culture that has been challenging for me is to be resilient or to remain strong and hide my feelings. In my culture(the African American culture) we’re taught at a young age to have the mental toughness and to hide your feelings. For example, if you’re going through trauma in your life, you’re suppose to suck it up, hold back any tear, and go through it like a man. This has been difficulty for me because a strong amount of trauma or a series of trauma usually breaks me.  Just like the time I lost my great uncle to cancer, I couldn’t hold any of my emotion back, all I could do was just flood my eyes out.

Write about a time when you did something out of the norm. What was it and how did others react?

The time I did something out of the norm is eating off my friend’s plate. In society, it is out of the ordinary to eat off another persons plate especially if they’re not related to you. One day at lunch, I was eating off of my friend’s plate from some food that his mom made him. I was getting looked at in public, but not a “that’s disgusting” look, more of people just taking a Quick Look at me. No one really cared that I did this, their reaction was just simple.

Describe a time when you felt completely lost.

A time a felt lost is the time I felt disconnected from God. Throughout my teenage years, I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself to be a perfect human being for Christ. One Time when I messed up, I felt like God just didn't want anything to do with me Anymore so I fell into a deep pit of guilt. So for months I went without reading my bible, praying, etc. At the time, I felt like confused, lost, scared, stressed, and useless. It was not until then that a day I stubble across a video on the internet, with another follower of Christ, a man who has also struggled with sinning. In the video, he tells his story and it suddenly connects to me. He shares this verse, 1 John 4:18-19, and elaborates on how even though we mess up God still loves us and will never create a feeling of torment for us. After watching that video, it uplifted me and showed me that even God still loves me, the me where I mess up or fall into to things of the world, but even still, he loves me as his Child.
